Spring Awakening ! detox the natural Ayurvedic way & put the spring back in your step

Did you manage to get through winter without getting sick?  Congratulations if you did. If you succumbed to the ravages of a cold or virus, then chances are your immune system will be firing on pretty empty cylinders by now. In addition to this, we are now emerging out of the heavy, cold, damp, mucousy qualities of winter which is Kapha season, into warmer, lighter qualities of Spring season. As the heat of Spring begins to shine through us, this is the time that all of the toxins that have built up over winter begin to melt. If we do not detox in preparation, then we fall foul of fevers, further colds and coughs, chills and hayfever. 

Here are my top 6 tips for the best Spring detox to put a spring back in your step

1.  SCRAPE

Tongue Scraper:
First thing in the morning before you brush your teeth, drink or eat - scrape your tongue!! Get a good quality stainless steel or copper tongue scraper. Avoid modern plastic ones.



Method:
Hold the two ends in each hand and place the curved edge towards the back of the mouth on the tongue. Lightly scrape 7-10 times from the back to the front of the tongue. Rinse and repeat.

Use bicarb of soda to regularly cleanse your tongue scraper.


Benefits: 
* boosts health of your oral cavity, gums, teeth and sinuses
* removes thick coating of toxins from the tongue and all organs of the body (the organs are represented on the tongue)
* improves digestion
* boosts metabolism
                                                     


2. DRINK


Warm ginger, honey, lemon, turmeric, cinamon tea
This is a fantastic morning drink to kick start your metabolism and your daily detox in the most healthy natural way!

Ingredients:
Grated fresh ginger
Juice of half a lemon
1/4 teaspoon honey
pinch cinnamon and pinch dry powdered turmeric

Method:
Place all ingredients into a small flask, place the lid on, allow to steep so that all the ingredients mellow out and get cosy with each other.

Drink first thing in the morning before eating, and throughout the day.

Benefits:
* cleanses digestive tract
* helps bowel movement in the morning
* natural detox and cleanse for whole system
* boosts metabolism and digestive fire (agni)
 
3. EAT




Keep it light, dry and warm
Winter or Kapha season has the qualities of 'heavy, damp and cold'. So Ayurveda uses the opposite qualities to balance out all excess Kapha in the system





Foods to prefer:
* simple, light, fresh, wholefoods
* light grains (millet, quinoa, buckwheat - which is not wheat but from the rhubarb family)
* clear, veggie soups (especially for dinner)
* lots of leafy greens
* bitter tastes (dandelion, endive, turmeric, fennegreek, nettle)
* warming herbs (ginger, black pepper. cinnamon, chives,  cardomon, cumin)
* steamed veggies (no sauces)

Foods to avoid: (increase congestion)
*processed or fried foods, takeaways
* meat
* sweets, desserts
*dairy
* yeasted breads
* sugar, caffeine, processed, canned foods

4. RUB

Abyangha (self oil massage)
This is a fantastic and really nurturing and enjoyable way to get everything moving for Spring!


Oil:
Use a dosha or body balancing oil. Organic sesame oil is a great choice for all body types.

Method:
1. Stand in the shower or bath without the water running Make sure the bathroom is warm
2. Warm oil in a jug of hot water - not too hot!
3. Apply a handful of warmed organic black seed sesame oil to your entire body.
4. Begin with your scalp (don’t worry it doesn’t make your hair greasy) and don’t forget your head and soles of feet (being careful not to slip in the shower with your oily feet). 
5. Use a soft rubbing motion massaging around in circular movements for the joints, and lengthways up and down your arms and legs. 
6. Follow this with a hot shower to rinse off.

1. Warm sesame oil penetrates all 7 layers of the skin & will give your skin a nice coat for warmth and protection
2. Boosts your immune system
3. Rejuvenate and revitalises your skin
4. Aids in proper elimination of wastes 
5. Gives you an all over glow 
6. Helps with flaky scalp and grey hairs
7. Promotes lustre, vitality and immunity
8. Removes toxins
9. Reduces stress
10. Promotes sleep
 
5. BREATHE




Kapalbhati
 Kapalbhati pranayama is the only physical and breathing technique useful for mind detoxification and purification. In all of the cleansing routines of yoga, kapalbhati is the only one which can cleanse both the mind and the body using only breath. As a de-stressing tool, kapalbhati breathing has shown remarkable results.


Method:
1. Sit straight with your spine erect and cross your legs in front of you.
2. Close your eyes. Take in a deep breath and exhale forcefully out of the nostrils suddenly,as if you are trying to snuff out a candle with your outward breath.
3. Focus on exhaling forcefully and not on the inhalation.
4. When you exhale, draw your abdominal muscles inward simultaneously. Your abdomen should rise when you inhale and fold when you exhale.
5. Continue for 21 breaths and then take a break.
6. Repeat three times in total.

Benefits:
*cleanses respiratory passages and flushes toxins
* stokes digestive fire (agni) - boosts metabolism, digestion and absorption
* improves circulation
*creates internal heat that will 'cook and dissolve' toxins in body


6. MOVE
 

Twists and Turns
 The best preparation for Spring is to get your body moving and twisting. Twisting poses are great to detoxing by literally 'wringing out' the toxins from your organs.



Organs that need help revitalize after winter are:
*  Lymph and blood
*  Liver, kidneys, and digestive organs.
* Parasympathetic nervous system (supports ideal functioning of these organs)

Poses:
* Inversions - to help drain lymphatic and blood and enhance detoxification
* Twisting poses -  to boost blood circulation and literally squeeze and detox organs
* Forward bends - to help flush toxins by boosting elimination processes (governed by Vata)

Compassion In Action - Uluru Retreat



His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet ~ often referred to as an Ocean of Wisdom, is the manifestation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokitesvara.

Next month, I'm very exited to be hosting a retreat to one of the most sacred places on the planet - Australia's very own Uluru. As if that wasnt amazing enough, our group will get to meet the Dalai Lama!!  It is such an honour and I for one feel incredibly blessed.

So, what does the Dalai Lama and his teachings have to do with regular people living regular lives you might ask? Its a good question, and the answer is a great deal. There is much that can be learned from such an incredibly conscious Being, regardless of whether we are Buddhists or not. Imagine for a moment that everything and everyone in this world operated from a place of compassion instead of greed, selfishness, fear, competition or judgement. Even just thinking about this scenario, can you feel how different the world would be?

Imagine for a moment that you had embodied compassion and that every thing you thought or saw or did came from this place. Imagine how different you might act around people or situations in your life. Instead of judging others, in its place would be great understanding of them and their actions. You would instantly recognise the troubles they were facing in their life and rather than judge their clumsy way of dealing with their own woes, you could simply feel loving towards them and even offer to listen to them.

Now take your imagination just a little further....to yourself. Imagine if, instead of when you look in the mirror each day criticizing how your body looks or how you acted the day before, you would see before you a soul in search of itself. You would recognise that you are just doing your best and that your best is always as good as it gets. That even if you tried harder, you can only ever do your best in the circumstances that you are faced with and at the level of awareness that you have at this time.

What a very different life and world we would all live in!

How to practice compassion:
We are not all destined to become fully realised Bodhisttvas (great realised souls who have dealt with all their karmas and take on karmas of others and reincarnate again and again to help humanity) in this lifetime. However, we are all moving towards this at differing rates through our incarnations. You can help yourself along that path greatly by simply deciding to do so.

Recipe for Compassion:
1. make a conscious decision to understand and realise compassion more in your life;
2. ask the Universe or your guides to help you understand and realise more about compassion;
3. be on the lookout for life events in each day that the Universe will bring to you to help you practice more compassion;
4. keep a compassion diary for a week or a month and note down when people are compassionate to you and you to them - record your wins!!;
5. have a go! try it out. When something really tricky hits your life, or someone, try to really listen between the words or actions to get an idea of whats really going on for that person or in that situation. You should find that underneath what isnt being said is the truth, which may be based in a lot of fear or uncertainty; and
6. let someone know that you have heard them. You don't need to necessarily agree with them, but simply affirm that you have heard them.

Then stand back and observe the changes flowing through your life and be amazed at how others begin to have more compassion towards you. After all, we are simply mirrors for each other.

Top 5 Ayurvedic Tools for a Peaceful Healthy Cracker of a Christmas

Christmas..........

Just take a few moments to close your eyes, take a deep breath in and ask yourself what it means to you.......


Now ask yourself this question:
"Is my reference to Christmas a joy filled one or one of dread and stress?. If I could have any type of Christmas how would it look and feel?"

Now start working towards making your ideal Christmas happen.  The only thing preventing you from really enjoying the holiday season is the limitations and worry and stress that you tell yourself will occur. So change the program. Update your internal mental software. Start to imagine your perfect Christmas. It all begins with the imagination. This is the root of all beliefs and thus all life experience in the physical plane.

Top 5 Tools for your Ayurvedic Kit Bag towards a Cracker of a Christmas:

1.Contemplation - spend 5 minutes each morning before you get out of bed in quiet contemplation of how you would like your day to unfold. Close your eyes and in your minds eye run through the things you want to achieve for the day and see them happening with ease. See yourself surrounded by helpful people who support you in a loving respectful way. See your whole day filled with joy and laughter.

2. Gratitude - next give thanks to your body and mind for all the support they give you to do your day of doing. Practicing an attitude of gratitude allows us to really see and focus on all the wonderful things we have in our lives and removes our negative reactions to life's stresses. When we have an attitude of gratitude the universe hears this signal and sends us more abundance in accordance with the law of flow.

3. My body is My Temple - your physical body carries you around all day and allows you to function in your daily life. Are you honouring your physical body or, do you treat it with disrespect? Begin today by doing one thing to honour your body. This could be going to the gym, going for a walk at the beach or in nature, having a massage, getting a hug from a loved one, or treating yourself to a facial. It can be anything that will serve as a boost to your body.

4. Food for Fought - whatever you put IN to the body is what you can get OUT of the body. If you put in rubbish, then rubbish will surely come out in your day, your emotions, your thoughts, your life. Just because its the silly season does not mean that we can start to dishonour our Selves. Keep a food diary with you at all times and write down everything you eat and drink this month. Be totally honest. No one has to see it! Its for your eyes only. When we can visually see what we are stuffing down, we are much more likely to take that healthier option from the food counter of our local cafe.

Its not the case that everyone has to drink litres of water a day either. Tune in to your own body. It will tell you what it needs. Too much water can dampen your digestive fire. Too little and your cells cannot regenerate healthily. If you are doing lots of exercise and sweating a lot then you need to replace the fluids. If you are sat at a desk all day and go home and eat diner in front of the TV then this wont apply to you. Best options are to sip plenty of herbal non caffeinated teas (yes even in summer) or opt for a health juice with some added ginger to pep up your digestion.

5. R&R - get plenty of good quality rest. Yes there are one or two more functions to go to this year but you dont have to be the last one standing! Go early and leave early. Catch the 10pm train to sleep. After this time you tip into pitta time and the body begins to wake up again.

Sleeping for 8 hours is of no use if you spend half the night worrying about the gifts you haven't bought yet or the work you need to finish before you can go away. Rest when you are resting, sleep when you are sleeping, eat when you are eating, and play when you are playing. In other words, do these practices and nothing else at the same time. Be fully focused on what you are doing. You will then be able to really "digest" all the data, emotions, words, interactions and food that you are subject to during your day of doing.
